Of all the “stuff” that I carry with me from my early days as a Coach, this concept of “charging what I am worth” has stuck with me.
And not in a good way.
Would it surprise you to learn that this topic has brought clients of mine to tears more often than not?
This idea that they must “charge what they are worth” becomes a sticky, messy, ugly goo that often paralyzes folks and stops them in their tracks.
I was told once that the reason this concept is such a gooey mess for so many is that we (I expect the person who told me this meant “women” when she said “we”) have only ever been taught to undervalue ourselves and not to step up and claim our true power and birthright in the form of dollars.
But you know what?
I call “BS” on this.
I call “BS” on ALL of this.
And here’s why:
When the phrase, “You must charge what you’re worth” comes into your mind, the reason you may find yourself in a gooey, sticky, ugly mess is quite simply that it is not possible.
You cannot “Charge What You Are Worth.”
You, Dear Reader, do not have a price tag attached to you.
In fact, when you think about it, it’s kind of gross to even consider such a thing.
Charge what you’re worth? Like you, in all your fiery, stunning, gorgeous glory are a trinket to be bought at the local shop? To be traded on the open market like a commodity?
You, Dear Reader, are “worth” all of the golden sun-kissed grains of sand on all of the beaches in all of the World.
You are “worth” the radiance of all of the stars in the heavens.
You are “worth” the beauty of the teeniest, tiniest, fragment of a snowflake, captured on the tongue of a toddler.
Your “worth”, my love, is Infinite.
And you simply cannot put a price tag on that.
I believe it is in claiming this –that our worth is as infinite as the sky above us – that we truly step into our true power.
What would it be like to accept this as Truth?
What would that feel like in your bones?
