As Summer slides into Autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere, I am, as is often the case in the presence of Nature, in complete and total Awe.
It is so beautiful to witness this Turning. The sound of the wind through the leaves as they shift from being those silky, new, smooth leaves of spring into the crisper, multi-coloured versions of themselves. The crunch of said leaves under my feet. The patter of acorns tumbling from the giant oak in our front yard. The scurrying of squirrels to gather said acorns…
This is my favourite Turning of the year. I adore Autumn in all its multi-hued glory. In the sweetness of local apples. In the careful choosing of our pumpkins. In the artful placement of our Hallowe’en décor. In the smell of stuffing and turkey soon to permeate our Home as Canadian Thanksgiving is but a couple short weeks away. In the rustle and shift as we move our Muskoka chairs indoors for the winter, placing them before the Hearth…
The bounty of this Turning is plenty. And within it falls my own Birthday, bringing with it another reason to celebrate, another Turning to mark on my own voyage around the Sun.
And I do not know, Dear Reader, if it is my own Imagination or Wishful Thinking but somehow, in some way, this Turning feels…different. I struggle to put it into words. What is it that I sense within me that is calling forth both giggles of joyful anticipation and tears of grief all within moments of one another?
I ask my dear friends, all of them Witchy in their own ways: Have you noticed this, too, Dear Ones, or is it just me? Is this just what Turning 48 feels like? Or does this Autumnal Turning feel…different…to you, too?
In the pause that follows, the cocking of their heads to one side as they ponder their replies, the deep inhale and exhale as they gather their thoughts, the glance towards the heavens, the furrowing of their brows, I know their answers before they even form the words: “Yes, now that you mention it,” they nod sagely, “there is indeed something different. Definitely. Absolutely. How interesting…”
And so I bring this to you, Dear Reader:
Something different is happening this Turning. Something upon which I cannot quite place my finger. Something for which I do not quite have the words. But it is a Something that I do believe bears consideration.
What could this Something mean for you? What could it bring into your life? What change could it herald? What meaning could it hold?
There is Nothing in this Moment to be Done…Nothing we could even begin to Do with this Something. It is instead a Moment simply to Observe and to Witness and to Ponder and to Consider and to Acknowledge and to Breathe.
Something different this way comes…and I, for one, can hardly wait.
